Hirosaki Ninja House
The Hirosaki Ninja Residence is the only remaining Kōga-style ninja residence in Japan. It is believed to have existed since 1761 (Hōreki 11), during the late Edo period. Unlike the war-torn eras typically associated with ninja activity, this house was used during a relatively peaceful time in Japanese history. As such, it lacks dramatic traps or large-scale contraptions like hidden revolving doors that are often designed to outwit enemies. Nonetheless, the house features many distinctive elements unique to a ninja residence, such as nightingale floors that chirp to alert against intruders, hidden compartments behind walls, and peep holes believed to have been used to monitor the outside of the residence. Visitors can get a fascinating glimpse into the daily life and ingenuity of ninja during this historical period.
